Earlier this afternoon, the police shot a man who was threatening his mother with a knife because he refused to drop the blade. The suspect was shot three times in the torso, and police say his mother was also hit in the buttocks.

At 1:57 p.m., the police responded to a call in a common hallway at 408 East 65th Street. A 22-year-old man was holding his 49-year-old mother at knifepoint; the police say that the officers asked him to drop his weapon, a steak knife, but he refused, so a sergeant discharged a Taser, "to no effect." So when the suspect allegedly turned towards the cops, two fired, hitting him three times and hitting his mother once.

The Daily News says that the suspect is Edgar Soto and that he was hit in the "torso, stomach and scrotum." Both suspect and victim were taken to New York Presbyeterian Hospital and are expected to survive. The investigation is ongoing.
