Two construction workers were killed earlier today after falling 65 feet from 150 West 83rd Street, a site that was being developed for the Redeemer Presbyterian Church. The men reportedly were working on top of an elevator shaft on the seventh floor and fell to scaffolding on the third. The two were rushed to separate hospitals, and both pronounced dead.

City Room reports that the beam they were working on gave way. F.J Sciame Construction company said in a statement, “The two workers who passed away today were employed by Weir Welding and Cross County Erectors. Sciame Construction Co. Inc. is fully cooperating with the investigation and extends its deepest sympathy to the families of the men who lost their lives today.” Department of Bulidings data show that the building failed an elevator inspection/test in October.

This brings the 2011's construction death total to three, just one fewer than 2010's total of four. The Police say there is no criminality suspected at this time.
