Police early Monday said they did not document any arrests or injuries outside Yankee Stadium Sunday night, despite massive tension and confusion as thousands of Jay-Z fans were forced to wait outside after a venue lockdown.

A record of more than 40,000 people were expected to attend the iconic rapper’s final show of a three-night run at the Bronx venue, but throngs of them were held up outside the stadium for hours on end. The venue shut the gates after a crowd of people without tickets tried to storm the entrance, according to organizers Roc Nation, Live Nation and the New York Yankees.

Eventually the show went on, featuring superstar guests including Beyoncé and wrapping around 3 a.m.

“Hundreds of individuals in large groups, who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance, stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security,” the concert organizers said in a statement. “As a result, gates at all entrances of the stadium were closed for an extended period of time.”

The organizers said the gates were later “reopened cautiously and carefully” with the guidance of the NYPD, but the scene outside Yankee Stadium had already turned chaotic. Some fans said they were so tired from waiting for so long that they left.

Bronx resident Christine Pardo said she paid $700 to see the show – hoping to relive the night she saw Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium with Eminem in 2010. But after waiting outside for more than four hours, she told Gothamist she finally gave up her dream and went home around 12:45 a.m.

“I was physically exhausted, and I could not wait anymore,” Pardo said, adding that the whole experience had left her in shock and “really, really disappointed.”

When the concert finally started around midnight — four hours after it was scheduled to begin — Jay-Z addressed the issue on stage.

“It was like 10,000 people outside. And they closed all the doors because somebody was rushing the door, and they closed the door for you guys’ safety and everybody’s safety outside,” he said. “I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was okay. So I appreciate your patience, we gonna have a good time tonight.”

Attendees who stuck it out were treated to surprises, including special performances by Rihanna, Beyonce, Usher and Pharrell, leading some fans on social media to say the concert redeemed the harrowing entry experience.

But for people like Pardo, who simply couldn’t stay, the night left a bitter taste and plenty of questions about who was to blame.

"They clearly dropped the ball with security,” Pardo said. “Yankee Stadium seats crowds of this capacity all the time.”

Pardo said she and her sister, who also bought a ticket, were going to dispute the charge on their credit cards. She added that many other people who also left before getting to see the show said they were planning to do the same.

It was not immediately clear whether fans who couldn’t make it inside the venue would be eligible for refunds. Yankee Stadium, Live Nation and Roc Nation did not respond to an inquiry.
