Mattresses may seem all soft and innocent, but as you can see from this photo, deep within the heart of every Sealy posturepedic lurks a diabolic pyromaniac just waiting to set the night on fire. Last night an S53 bus headed from from Staten Island to Brooklyn ran over a twin-size mattress near the Verrazano Bridge around 10:30. A police source tells the Daily News the bus then dragged the mattress over the bridge, and along the way one of the mattress springs punctured the bus's gas tank.
The driver evacuated the bus on Dahlgren Place near 92nd Street, and the MTA tells us there were no injuries. But the burning fuel flooded into the street, and six parked cars went up in flames. The FDNY got the situation under control by 11:15 p.m., but the cars and the bus are totaled. It was a tough break for straight-talking area man Mike Rabo, 27, who told the News, "It was a really bad feeling watching my BMW burn."
