A Brooklyn man drowned in upstate New York this weekend trying to rescue his dog from a pond.

Garvin Brown, 34, was walking his dog near his rented Finger Lakes home over the weekend when his pet walked onto a thin layer of ice covering a pond. Unable to support the dog's weight, the ice broke and the dog tumbled in.

According to News 8 WROC Rochester, Brown ran inside to tell his fiancee what happened before rushing back out to attempt to rescue the dog. But the thin ice was no better able to support Brown's weight, causing him to fall in as well. He was found dead by investigators shortly thereafter.

Bill Gallagher, Lieutenant of the Ontario County Sheriff's Department, told the news station that calls for people and animals falling through the ice are common this time of year.

"Civilians shouldn't try this... stay off the ice," he said. "The other problem is that the water is so cold now, when you go into this water in this type of weather your chances of survival are very slim."

The dog apparently survived.
