Police said they are investigating the death of a Brooklyn toddler as a homicide after he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
According to the NYPD, officers responding to a 911 call Friday around 5 p.m. found 1-year-old Anthony Casey unconscious in an apartment building on Newport Street near Thatford Avenue in Brownsville. First responders took him to Brookdale Hospital, where he was treated for body trauma but did not survive, police said.
Casey died of blunt force injuries, a spokesperson for the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Tuesday. Police have not yet announced any arrests in the case.
The city's Administration for Children's Services is working with the NYPD to investigate the incident, a spokesperson said. The agency has "taken action" to make sure the other child in the household is safe, she added.
Casey’s death comes just over a month after officials said 1-year-old Imani Mitchell was killed at an apartment building in the Bronx. She was hospitalized in late August with severe brain injuries and died about a week later, according to authorities.
Police arrested Mitchell’s mother’s boyfriend, 19-year-old Jerome Thomas, and charged him with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. His attorney did not respond to a request for comment about the case at the time.
NYPD data through Oct. 5 shows there were three other homicides this year in the 73rd Precinct, which includes Brownsville. That was down more than 80% from the same point last year. Homicides have dropped about 17% citywide since 2024.
