That awful fire in Sunset Park last month (which took 138 firefighters 2 1/2 hours to put out and sent more than 30 people to the hospital) brought a bit of light to the Staten Island University Hospital's burn unit yesterday. That's because one of the victim's of the fire, an unidentified woman, gave birth there. It was the first time anyone in the hospital could remember a baby being born in the burn unit.
The baby boy weighed in at 4 pounds, 9 ounces when he was delivered, more than two weeks after his mother was brought in with serious injuries.
"The burn-unit staff is a very special staff. They are always dealing with tragedy, and now we have an opportunity to deal with life," said a hospital spokesperson.
The man who is alleged to have started the blaze, 56-year-old Chiu Tsang, meanwhile, faces charges of criminal mischief and multiple counts of assault.
