This is horrible: MyFoxNY reports that firefighters, responding to a call in Mount Vernon, "found four kittens inside a burning desk drawer in an apartment building."

The Westchester SPCA believes "someone set fire to papers in the drawer inside a basement of the building and then left the kittens to die" on Easter Sunday. The two-week-old kittens were rescued and are all recovering: Two had singed fur and another had a cut. The kittens apparently "survived by moving to the back of the drawer while the front burned." Aww.

The SPCA and Mount Vernon police are investigating and asking for anyone with information to call the SPCA's confidential 24-hour cruelty hot line at 914-941-7797. Additionally, WABC 7 reports that the SPCA "says they've received several emails and calls from people who are interested in adopting the kittens. Officials said it will be at least five weeks before the kittens can be adopted. For the time being, they are staying with an SPCA volunteer who is an expert in bottle feeding kittens."
