At WNYC and Gothamist, we believe government functions best when the people whose decisions shape all of our lives are answerable to you.

This Wednesday evening, WNYC launches “Ask Governor Sherrill” — your chance to present questions directly to New Jersey’s top elected official and one of the most powerful governors in the country. Gov. Mikie Sherrill will join WNYC “Morning Edition” host Michael Hill for an hour of discussion of some of the most pressing issues for Garden State residents.

We want to hear directly from you. Call in at 844-745-8255 to speak with the governor, or submit your questions here in advance. The program airs Wednesday at 7 p.m on 93.9 FM, WNYC.org and the WNYC app.

The program launches just four months into Sherrill’s term. She’s already abandoned her predecessor’s controversial plan to double the New Jersey Turnpike's Newark Bay Bridge with a second span when it's replaced. She’s proposed a budget that would boost school funding but threatens to cut back several programs, including a tax relief initiative championed by legislative leaders. The Democratic governor has forged an unlikely alliance with Roxbury Township’s all-Republican Council by opposing an immigration detention center slated to open in their backyard. And she’s promised bold, rapid relief for energy costs — while opening the door to new nuclear power generation along the way.

Sherrill also joins WNYC a day before New Jersey voters choose her successor for her former congressional seat in the 11th District. Democrat and progressive activist Analilia Mejia faces the Republican mayor of Randolph, Joe Hathaway, in a special election seen as an indicator of how voters are leaning ahead of this fall’s midterms.

“Ask Governor Sherrill” — in partnership with WBGO in Newark, WHYY in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and Montclair State University — continues WNYC’s tradition of offering New Jerseyans a direct line to their elected officials. It follows “Ask Governor Murphy,” which aired for nearly eight years on the station and its partners, and joins a lineup with the “The Brian Lehrer Show’s” recurring segment, “Call Your Senator,” which features appearances from New Jersey Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim.

“Ask Governor Sherrill” airs live from the studios of Montclair State University’s College Of Communication and Media. Sherrill will return for the next installment of the show on Wednesday, June 3.
