Police say a man was shot and killed at a Bronx subway station early Friday morning, and police were searching for three potential suspects — less than two weeks after another fatal subway shooting in the borough.
NYPD officials said the gunfire erupted at around 5 a.m. as a southbound D train pulled into the station on 182nd Street and Grand Concourse in Fordham Heights.
First responders found the 45-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Officials said three men wearing all black ran from the train in an unknown direction and no firearm was recovered at the scene.
The victim’s name was not immediately released, as police worked to notify his family.
Friday’s shooting is the latest of several episodes of gun violence on the subway.
Six people were shot on the platform at the Mt. Eden Avenue subway station in the Bronx on Feb. 12 as teenagers exchanged gunfire. Obed Beltran-Sanchez, a 35-year-old immigrant from Mexico, was killed.
A month before that, 45-year-old Richard Henderson was shot dead aboard a 3 train in Crown Heights, Brooklyn while trying to break up a fight over loud music, according to police.
Homicides in the subway system decreased last year according to NYPD data, with five subway killings in 2023 compared to nine in 2022. Although subway assaults spiked to a 27-year high in 2023, overall subway crime was still down compared to the year before, according to the department.
The latest data from the NYPD shows an 18% increase in transit crime so far this year compared to the same time frame last year.
According to MTA data from June of 2023, between three and four million people ride the subway each day, and between one and two million ride the city’s buses.
