Here we go again with the Ruben Diaz and the abortion and the Hitler! Remember back in 2005 when the State Senator argued that abortion is "the American Holocaust" and said, "I want to compare Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust to what is happening to abortion in America." No? Well, the Anti-Defamation League does remember, which is why they're not to surprised about Diaz's latest attempt to connect abortion to genocide. Not surprised, but outraged nonetheless.
In his regular email to supporters and reporters, Diaz blasted Governor Cuomo and the state legislature for Reproductive Health Act, which, if passed, would change state law to treat abortion as a public health issue. According to a copy of the email obtained by Politicker, Diaz declared the bill would "make abortion on demand a reality in the State of New York." He then went on to say, "Hitler was pro-choice. He chose to send the Jews to Auschwitz. That was not their choice that was Hitler’s choice. Murderers, assassins and criminals are pro-choice. They choose to put a gun to your head and take your life. That is not your choice. That is their choice."
Naturally, this raised some eyebrows at the ADL, which fired off one of their classic condemnation letters from their in-house outrage factory:
State Sen. Ruben Diaz is a repeat offender when it comes to making offensive and inappropriate comparisons to the Holocaust. Seven years ago we asked him to avoid such comparisons, but he was unrepentant then and has never apologized.
While the senator is certainly entitled to his passionate political and religious opinions, invoking the Holocaust and the Nazi regime's murderous policies, which resulted in the deaths of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust, is deeply offensive and has no place in civil political discourse.
We have consistently reminded political, business and cultural leaders of the need for greater sensitivity and selectiveness when invoking the Holocaust and the Nazis. We hope that Sen. Diaz will come to understand why such comparisons are so offensive to Jews and families of the brave American soldiers who sacrificed so much in fighting Hitler's regime in the Second World War.
While we don't expect Diaz to offer an apology any time soon, the least he can do is have an intern edit that Hitler bunker movie scene to show Hitler's reaction to the news that Eva Braun poked holes in one of his condoms.
