A Queens man is facing a manslaughter charge after police arrested him for the death of another man he allegedly fought at a Bronx subway station early Wednesday.
NYPD officials said Keith Plummer, 68, was taken into custody after officers found the victim unconscious at the Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street station on the 1 line just after 3 a.m.
First responders took the victim to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials did not immediately identify him as they worked to notify his family.
Police said Plummer and the victim didn’t appear to know each other and got into a fight at the station that led to the man’s death. Authorities have not yet detailed the injuries he sustained.
Plummer was awaiting his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court early Thursday. Information for his lawyer was not immediately available. Police said he lives in South Jamaica.
Homicides in the 50th Precinct, which encompasses northwestern Bronx neighborhoods like Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, and Spuyten Duyvil, have increased significantly so far this year, with four others reported through May 10, according to police data. There was one homicide in the precinct in the same timeframe last year, the data shows.
Citywide, homicides have fallen by more than 26% so far this year, according to the NYPD. Major crime in the transit system is about 1% down from its level at this point last year.
Officials said one of the other killings in the precinct this year happened just steps from the same subway station. In January, 44-year-old Keon Gill was fatally shot on the street nearby. Police later arrested three people on murder charges for the shooting.
