Primary Day in New York was unlike anything in recent years for a majority of races, given the roughly 760,000 absentee ballots mailed across the five boroughs as a result of the pandemic—leaving winners undetermined for several races until at least a few weeks. Voting in person at poll sites involved sadly familiar problems like missing ballots, malfunctioning machines, and more. Here's what we know:
There's one very clear probable winner tonight: Former vice president Joe Biden. He was running in the Democratic presidential primary, which was initially canceled by the state Board of Elections in May but later forced to reinstate it following a court decision. While Biden clinched the Democratic nomination earlier this month, the real spoils of the race are the delegates.
Several races are not being called across the city this primary. One of the most anticipated races is in the South Bronx, the battle for race for the 15th Congressional District is still up in the air. But so far, Councilman Ritchie Torres leads with the most in-person and early votes over the candidates. Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr., the father of the current Bronx borough president, was considered the frontrunner in the race, battling it out with 11 candidates, including Torres. But Torres raised the most cash, giving him a great advantage over the rest of the candidates, which include former New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and community organizer Samelys Lopez.
In the 14th Congressional District, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now an incumbent over challengers Michele Caruso-Cabrera, a former journalist for CNBC; Sam Sloan; and Badrun Khan. And in a contest that pitted establishment versus progressive Democrats, Congressman Eliot Engel is running for a 17th term representing the 16th Congressional District in the Bronx and parts of lower Westchester, against challenger Jamaal Bowman, an educator who received major backing from the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez, and Cynthia Nixon.
In other parts of the city, Representatives Jerry Nadler, Carolyn Maloney, Adriano Espaillat, and Gregory Meeks are seeking reelection. Here are Congressional results across the state:
