The New York City region could get its biggest snowfall of the year so far by Monday, as a wintry weather pattern tightens its grip on the metro area over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, 2 to 4 inches of snow could fall across the city and its surroundings from Sunday night into Monday morning, with up to 6 inches possible in some places.
Then, an arctic blast is predicted to take hold and last into next week.
“ We're going to see a very cold air mass kind of come in and replace that low pressure, giving us really our coldest temperatures of the season,” said NWS meteorologist Dave Radell.
Tuesday into Wednesday will have high temperatures barely reaching the teens, and wind chills in the single digits, Radell said. Those will be the coldest conditions of the season yet.
But the deep freeze is looking to be short-lived, as temperatures will start creeping up toward the end of the week, according to the forecast.
Before the snow arrives, this weekend’s weather is expected to be mild, with chances of rain on Saturday and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s. Sunday will be in the mid-30s, NWS said.
