Governors Island is going to be a great place to eat this summer. Sure, the Governors Ball might be on Randall's Island this year and the island itself will be closed on weekdays for a massive makeover, but food wise the island will be crackling like the skin of freshly roasted pig. Mmmm, pig.
To get the eating going, a new event called the 5 Boro PicNYC (groan) comes to the island Memorial Day weekend, May 26 and 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Its a pretty hefty event that includes food from all five boroughs (natch), a big selection of Sixpoint craft ales (exclusively Sixpoint, in fact), a grilled cheese competition, a "hot sauce derby," "walking puppets," a compost demo and, also, some live music. Tickets go on sale here on April 24.
Then in July the Cook-Out NYC returns to the island—this time for two days—on July 7 and 8th from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Once again the "ultimate outdoor cooking and country fair event" will include food from local spots, cook-offs, a kimchi-eating contest and more. Full details and tickets for that event are still forthcoming.
And wait! There's more! To close out the summer we get the return of that annual porkapalooza, Pig Island, on Saturday, September 1. There will be local wine and beer, sure, but also lots and lots of pork. Pork, pork, pork. Also, a "Chef's Band" playing live. Full details and ticket prices for that one are also still forthcoming.
