What's being promoted as New York City's first ever balut-eating contest will go down this Saturday (and hopefully stay down) at Dekalb Market in Brooklyn. For the uninitiated, balut is "a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell." It's considered a street food delicacy in the Philippines, and adventurous eaters in New York have often enjoyed them at Maharlika in the East Village. So Maharlika's owner Nicole Ponseca decided to organize a little competitive-eating contest.

Registration for the contest concludes at the end of today. To participate, simply send an email to [email protected] and be prepared to slurp down bits of bones and feathers swimming in their own broth. So far eight contestants have signed up, and Ponseca tells GMA News, "Participants will compete against each other, ‘Coney Island hotdog eating contest’ style to determine who will be crowned ‘balut’ eating champion. What says summer better than drinks, roasted pork and fertilized duck egg?" She left out "projectile vomiting," but maybe that's where YOU come in. [Via Grub Street]
