Starting Memorial Day weekend, you'll be able to get 16-ounce cans of Sixpoint Sweet Action, Bengali Tiger IPA, Righteous Ale, and The Crisp in NYC stores. Until now, pretty much the only place you could obtain this magnificent local craft beer was in a bar, on tap, so this is a very big deal. Brewmaster Shane Welch tells Serious Eats why they went with cans as opposed to bottles.

"For one thing, the beer is filled to the top while the lid is stamped on under pressure, so the beer is generally fresher than in bottles where a pocket of air still exists," says Welch. "As a result, the dissolved oxygen levels which create stale flavors in bottled beer are usually in higher concentration in bottles versus cans. Additionally, cans are impenetrable to ambient light unlike clear or tinted glass bottles."

Brooklyn Summer Ale is being sold in cans for the first time, and to celebrate this momentous development, they're throwing a series of Summer "CANibalization" Parties at three NYC venues on Thursday night, from 7-10 p.m. The parties will happen simultaneously at Good Co. in Williamsburg (10 Hope Street) withcomplimentary grass-fed hot dogs from The Meat Hook; Pub One DUMBO (5 Front Street); and The Hill in Murray Hill (416 3rd Avenue). Each party will be serving $3cans of Summer Ale and doing Brooklyn Brewerymerch giveaways. (We want this koozie!)

Brooklyn Brewery tells us their Summer Ale is inspired by the Light Dinner Ales brewed in England throughout the 1800s right up until the 1940s. They were also called luncheon ales or even family ales, because they were refreshing and flavorful without being too heavy. "Brooklyn Summer Ale is brewed from premium English barley malt, which gives this light-bodied golden beer a fresh bready flavor. German and American hops lend a light crisp bitterness and a citrus/floral aroma, resulting in a beer with a very sunny disposition."

Narragansett, the 120-year-old Rhode Island beer company, recently entered the New York market, and now they're selling their Summer Ale in 16 oz. Tallboy cans. They tell us this light session ale "features two row pale malt and citra hops, a very popular, newer variety of hops with very evident aromas of citrus and passion fruit that complement the pale malt perfectly. Golden blonde in color, its pour produces a generous white head and balanced carbonation. A supremely drinkable summer craft brew, the malt flavor is smooth and subtle, balanced out by a crisp hop bitterness, perfect for the beach, boat or ballgame." Summer Ale is 4.2% Alcohol by Volume.

Fun fact to enthrall your drinking buddies: this is the first Ale to be produced by Narragansett Beer since the 1970s. Knownbest for its signature Lager, a wide variety of Ales were once available, beginning in the late1800s. The original brewery devoted an entire four-story building to the âAle Department,â andstaples like the Pale Ale, Select Stock Ale, and Banquet Ale outsold Lager until the 1940s whenAmerican tastes changed as a result of thousands of GIâs returning home from Lager-drinkingEuropean countries during World War 1 & II, and a wave of Lager-drinking immigrants.
