Eat Cetera: DBA Beer Benefit For Ray Deter, Hotel Chantelle's Roof, Sky Foods In Flushing

Ray Deter (via d.b.a's Facebook)

The memory of Ray Deter, much-loved owner of beer-geek haunt d.b.a who died last month after a cycling accident, lives on next week at a benefit hosted by d.b.a Brooklyn to honor Deter's memory and raise money for his two son's college funds. The August 1st event, dubbed "A Toast To Ray," won't be a somber affair—expect to chow down on a whole pig, raw oysters, and mountains of bread of cheese from the likes of Fette Sau, Jimmy's no. 43 and Tchoup Chop; plus, of course, beers from local breweries like Sixpoint, Saison Dupont and Kelso. Tickets are $20 for all-you-can-eat-pay-for-your-drinks or $50 for drinks included, and are available here. Hotel Chantelle: If you haven't checked out this sexy tri-level Lower East Side cocktail lounge, there's no better time then the present, because things are in full swing up on the roof. It's been open for a few weeks now, and while you wouldn't know it from the establishment's unglamorous exterior, there's a beautiful urban oasis waiting at the top of the stairs. Complete with flowers, rosebushes, miniature streetlamps and park benches, the spacious roof seats 130 people, and there's a retractable roof that lets them pump the A.C. when it's stinking hot, then open it up for stargazing when things cool off.

Benjamin Shih, who runs Sweet Ups (and the now defunct Royal Oak), is no longer involved in the venture; it's been taken over by Ravi Patel, who also operates the Hotel Ravel rooftop in Long Island City. The menu from young chef Jeff Kreisel pays homage to the neighborhood's historic multiculturalism, with slight nods to cuisine from Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Morocco, India, and Vietnam. Entrees include a Madras Peanut Curry with toasted farro, haricots verts, jicama, heirloom carrots, mango pickles & tzatziki ($15); a skirt steak featuring a South Asian homemade coriander chutney recipe created by Patel’s mom ($19); and an array of sliders such as Pulled Pork with pickled jicama, carrots & cucumbers, cilantro and tarragon tartar on a parker roll.

If you've been to Hotel Chantelle for drinks, you know the cocktails are quite meticulously rendered, and they're now served up on the roof year-round, thanks to that magical retractable roof.

92 Ludlow Street
