Health-conscious Williamsburgers now have a new spot to indulge in sweets sans animal products or detox with some freshly steeped tea following a borough binge. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Little Choc Apothecary has settled into a bi-level space on Havemeyer in the southern section of the neighborhood that once boasted the borough's trailblazing vegan fast food joint Foodwings (RIP). The new shop touts itself as the city's first fully vegan creperie, with both savory and sweet applications plus other cruelty-free dishes and drinks.
The Room for Mushroom crepe comes filled with herb-roasted mushrooms, baby spinach, walnuts and truffle oil while The Khail Seitan comes with homemade seitan, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, kale and hummus. What, no cheese? Sweet crepes are of the DIY variety, with peach jam, pecans, banana, caramel sauce and dairy-free "Newtella" just a few of the dozen or so options. Crepes are all gluten-free in addition to being animal product-free.
Though owner Julia Kravets plays up the health angle to her shop— organic and local products, no corn syrup or refined sugars, etc.—there's still plenty of room for sin. Chocolate mud cakes, coconut-topped brownies, chocolate chip cookies and a selection of muffins and scones will be baked up daily. On the flip side, freshly pressed juices, espresso drinks from Toby's Estate and an enormous tea program are also part of the business. Opt for one of the cafe's pre-mixed tea creations or make your own from over 100 different varieties of dried herbs.
