Earlier this month, we all but confirmed the demolition date of beloved East Village dive Mars Bar, and tonight could very well be the final hurrah for the graffiti and beer-stained institution.
According to a Crains article, all of the tenants next to Mars Bar are being asked to leave by today (to make way, naturally, for a 12-story luxury high rise). But EV Grieve spoke to some "reliable sources" who say that Mars Bar's owner has put in a weekend liquor order, "So either tonight will be a helluva blow out, as one of the sources put it, or the bar will be open for what promises to be a lucrative holiday weekend."
A staffer at Mars this afternoon told us she didn't know if tonight would be their last, but apparently, regulars have already been stealing the bar stools as souvenirs. If you plan to mourn for Mars, it probably wouldn't hurt to swing by tonight, you know, just in case.
