"Finally, Greenpoint has a real fucking ROCK BAR!" declare the owners of Saint Vitus, the new 2,500 square foot bar, eatery and venue opening in Greenpoint next week. Owned by a group of guys who've been behind the bar at places like Bar Matchless, Lil Frankies and No. 7, Saint Vitus (named for a Black Sabbath song that is itself named for the nervous system disorder) was a social club, then a plumbing school in a past life. Now, as you can see from these photos, designer Matthew Maddy (Weather-Up, Anella, The Box) has transformed it into a seductive party destination.
"All three of us are musicians, so we designed this place to be a musician's dream," co-owner Justin Scurti tells us. "It's not too big, not too small, and we built it to our specifications for the best sound and stage set-up." Scurti says he plans to book everything from "good country music to black metal." To help enhance all that entertainment, Saint Vitus offers ten beers on tap, plus classic cocktails made with homemade ingredients like grenadine, lime cordial and honey simple. The signature drink is The Saint Vitus, made with whisky, homemade honey simple, fresh squeezed lemon and Nero D'avola vino. They also do a Brooklyn Brine Pickle Back, made with Whisky Rye brine.
Edible options include St. Vitus Buns; Short Ribs with Pickled Red Cabbage and Carrot Puree; Pulled Pork with Coleslaw and Green Chili; Grilled Cheese with Camembert, Quince, Almond; and BBQ Tofu with Cilantro and Kimchee. Scurti tells us they got their last piece of paperwork today and that they hope to open Wednesday. (Stay tuned to the Saint Vitus Twitter for the exact date.)
Photographer Katie Sokoler tells us, "This place is awesome. It's at the very end of Manhattan Ave and feels so secretive! It's hard to tell where the entrance is because it's just these black doors so I ended up wandering around someone's apartment building, heh. It's a pretty giant space. It's really dark and lit with red candles. And of course the skeleton is awesome ;)"
