Sometimes, we're told, you just crave haggis, that savory Scottish pudding made of offal and spices stuffed into and cooked inside an animal intestine. So thank goodness for Scotland's favorite son, Robert Burns. Every year the birthday of the poet who gave us "Auld Lang Syne" is celebrated with a dinner that includes haggis, a reading of Burns' "Address to a Haggis," Scotch whisky, kilts, more poetry and sometimes dancing. And guess what? Burns' bday is just around the corner.
As usual a number of sports are celebrating ol' Rabbie this year. Here are four, which you can, in theory, hit all of!
The New York Caledonian Club This Scottish society is holding its annual dinner boasting haggis "with all the trimmings," followed by Ceilidh dancing, this Saturday, January 19. Tickets aren't cheap ($150 for non-members and $140 for members) but you'll get an authentic evening for sure. You can get yours over here. 6 P.M. // 3 West Club, 3 West 51st Street
Caledonia Scottish Pub On the Upper East Side this pub is celebrating Burns on Wednesday, January 23rd, with a $25 meal of haggis, neeps and tatties and a choice of whisky for $25. Dinner will be served from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. (or whenever they run out of haggis). 1609 Second Avenue // 212-879-0402
Highlands This West Village Scottish gastropub is going all out for its Robbie Burns celebration—think bagpipes to play in the haggis and poetry. So naturally seats are going fast. So fast, in fact, they had to add a second night! The January 24th 9 p.m. dinner is sold out, but there are still limited spaces at the January 24th, 6:30 p.m. seating and the January 23rd 7:30 p.m. seating! Book quick! 150 West 10th Street // 212-229-2670
St. Andrews In this Midtown spot the $70 dinner includes the standard haggis, sure, but also lots of other dishes for those who aren't really into eating offal-stuffed-innards. Reservations definitely required though! January 25th, 7 P.M. // 140 West 46th Street // 212-840-8413
