An obscure, recently arrested, former television actor named George Clooney is getting ready to launch a line of tequila with Rande Gerber, the husband of a similarly unfamous woman named Cindy Crawford. And who knows, those crazy kids just might make this happen. Worked for Dan Ackroyd, didn't it?
The news of Clooney's tequila was actually dropped a few weeks ago at the end of a Wall Street Journal article on Gerber's new brand of rum, Caliche, but for some reason it has gone viral today. Anyway, here's about all we know about the product at the moment:
Mr. Gerber and his good friend George Clooney also plan to bring to market a tequila they've been drinking for the last few years. That will be called Casamigos, named after the homes they own in Mexico. Messrs. Clooney and Gerber hope to keep the tequila (and the rum) at a reasonable price point. "I don't think we're going to be following all the rules," Mr. Gerber said of his endeavors. "We know we have a product we love and we drink, and other people will enjoy. The product speaks for itself."
Clooney will hardly be the first Hollywood type to get into selling libations (and not just selling 'em). Francis Ford Coppola has been at it for years, Drew Berrymore just launched a line of wine (Barrymore Pinot Grigio) and Antonio Banderas has a winery in Spain (Anta Banderas). But Clooney—who some of us remember from his pre-ER days on Roseanne and Sisters (Falconer, RIP)—might be the the most handsome?
Meanwhile, for the record! We thoroughly approve of the idea of reasonably priced, celebrity-backed liquors. But we won't believe it until we've seen it.
