City Bakery's earth-friendly bakery offshoot Birdbath will be following the trend of baked goods and booze, opening up a new UWS shop that'll sell wine, beer and cider. Owner Maury Rubin confirmed to DNA Info that he'll take over a former Italian cafe on Columbus Avenue and West 73rd Street, where he'll serve his customary array of baked treats, salads and some small plate-type dishes for dinnertime.
The new store will be counter service-style like the other outposts, but the design of this location channels a "living room" vibe with a communal table, as well as vintage wallpaper, fabrics and furniture like a day bed from the '60s. Most notably, this will be the first location to offer alcohol, which Rubin says will be mostly from local purveyors and will consist of two wines, two beers and two ciders on a rotating basis.
Birdbath operates several stores in Manhattan including a new Grand Central area shop and two more on the Upper West Side. But as Eater notes, the chainlet has had some recent issues including the closing of an East Village location and difficulty opening a West Village location.
