Would you believe that another cocktail bar has opened in Alphabet City? True story! At the recently opened The Wayland fancy cocktails share the room with live music (on a small stage) and basic classy bar bites like oysters, roasted bone marrow and steak tartare. Also something called "Braised Beast on Toast."
The newcomer comes from Jason Mendenhall (who previously worked at Madame Geneva) and Robert Ceraso (recently at Beppe) and boasts your typical-these-days antiques and street furniture-finds decor (according to the bar, "the tongue and groove floor boards were salvaged by the owners from the original floor and ceiling of the Henry Street Settlement’s 9th St. Day Care Center around the corner").
Meanwhile the bar's booze is pretty of the moment—they sell a very fancy Fernet and homemade soda with applewood-smoked ice combo called a San Fran Spout, also a kale margarita—and includes "cheap" options like $4 cans of Modelo. Beyond the drinks though, the charm of the space comes from the live music (expect indie rock, blue grass and the like) and the fact that everybody working there seems to do a little bit of everything. The bartenders shuck oysters, the chefs make drinks—the cats and dogs live together in perfect harmony!
