Valentine's day. We're on the fence. Getting flowers is nice, but we also like getting flowers on the 13th and 15th. Overall there is too much pressure put on the day, on singles and couples alike, and we hate when companies use it to wrangle up the former and pour lemon juice cocktails into their wounded, bleeding, unloved hearts (ahem, Fresh Direct).
You can ignore it or embrace it but it's coming up tomorrow either way, and here are some alternatives to candlelit dinners, moonlit walks and pelting happy couples with eggs:
ROCK:The Deli's Single Serving Valentine's Day Party is here to save your night. With rock. The New York indie music rag is taking Valentine's Day back for the overlooked and misunderstood single people! While others are whispering sweet nothings and using stupid pet-names - the Deli will help you rock! Which is so much cooler.
Schedule:
8.45 Goodnight Gunfight,
9.30 Pink Noise,
10.15 Susu,
11.00 Dragons of Zynth
Tuesday // 8:30 // Sin-e' [150 Attorney St] // $10
ORCHESTRA(-ish):Accordion Orchestra brings V-day to the LES. Is there anything more romantic than the accordion?
The all-female 14-piece, all-accordion ensemble will enchant you with songs by Kurt Weill, Joy Division and Louis Armstrong, among others.
Tuesday // 8:30 // Mo Pitkin's [34 Avenue A at 3rd St] // $10
PARTY: Join Michael Nouveau, Larry Tee, other assorted scenesters and the rest of your friends at Nouveau. Dance off the Valentine's day blues in to the wee morning hours of the 15th, when it'll all be over. After all , nothing says "love" like an open Bacardi bar (from 9 to 10) and, of course, free Jello Shots.
Tuesday // 9pm // Fat Baby [112 Rivington St at Essex] // Free
WINE TASTING: Are you reflecting on the shortcomings of your love life? (Sounds like the subject of some spam emails we get.) Not to worry, The Museum of Sex is here to help you and your Valentine. Wine and Seduction will "introduce and establish multiple intersections between the Dionysian delights and eroticists everywhere". Bottom line, attending will improve your love life and expand your sensual horizons. You'll also get the answer to the age old question, "What is the correct wine for seduction?" Grain alcohol and some fruit punch used to work on us, but we suppose wine seems a bit more classy. There will also be cheese served, which sounds not sexy at all, but this museum is all about the non-traditional.
Tuesday // 7:30pm - 9:30pm // Museum of Sex [233 Fifth Ave at 27th St] // $58 each; $99 for couples
We'll have more non-heart themed events for you tomorrow in our leftovers post, in the meantime: how are you spending Valentine's Day?
