After five years of agonizing sleepless nights spent tossing and turning and wondering whether Netflix blue it with their Arrested Development season four revival, the show is set to return for season five on Netflix on May 29th. And you can watch the first trailer for the "new new beginning" below, which may trigger your chicken dance reflex whether you like it or not.

Did that hit your dopamine receptors like it did mine? Dare I say I'm really excited once again to hang out with the Bluths? I think it's common consensus that season four was a bit of a mess, mostly due to the scheduling struggles of wrangling the illustrious cast in one place at one time. With every episode of that season focusing on one or two characters, the show was missing the essential back-and-forth chemistry of the main cast. It also wasn't helped by the fact that creator Mitch Hurwitz decided to try out a Rashoman-style, overlapping time periods/perspectives structure that made the season hard to follow. There's a good reason why Hurwitz recut the fourth season into 22 chronologically straightforward episodes for Netflix and released them as Arrested Development Season Four Remix: Fateful Consequences last Friday (good luck finding the old cuts of the episodes now).

But I'm feeling much more confident about the new season thanks to this trailer, Hurwitz's implicit acknowledgment of the problems of season four, and comments from Henry Winkler, who told us that filming the new season was totally different from season four. "So I'm doing a scene with Jeff Tambor and Jessica Walter and they are x's, they are tape on light stands," Winkler told us of what it was like filming season four. "This year everybody was in the same room at the same time."

As for the plot of the new season, Hurwitz previously talked about his idea to turn season five into a serialized murder mystery parody, a la popular true crime stories such as Making A Murderer, The Jinx or Serial. It's unclear if that idea will be a part of the new season, but the trailer does reveal that they will continue the story of politician Lindsay Bluth, who ended season four with a “put up the wall” speech, with all the Donald Trumpian overtones that implies. Another tidbit according to another secret teaser on Netflix's YouTube page is this: "The Bluths are winning the Family of the Year Award! The award is sponsored by the Bluth Austero Company, so technically they are giving it to themselves. Still a win though."

There's been some controversy around the fact Tambor, who was fired from Transparent after being accused of sexual harassment late last year, is returning for the new season. Tambor opened up for the first time about the allegations with The Hollywood Reporter in a long interview today: "I drove myself and my castmates crazy. Lines got blurred. I was difficult. I was mean."

And make sure to keep an eye out around town this week, since the Bluth stair car was spotted heralding the new season this weekend.
