Last year, the Volkswagen Vader ad was declared the most entertaining non-football part of the Super Bowl, and it was well deserved: a Star Wars-obsessed kid is gonna be more entertaining than a Black Eyed Peas halftime show 11 out of 10 times. But how can they follow up such a masterpiece? We already knew from their teaser that the scientists at Volkswagon were up to something involving Star Wars and dogs. But have they taken things too far to achieve the ultimate level of synergetic viral cuteness? Watch below and decide.

We enjoy the first half of the commercial plenty: an adorably out-of-shape dog is inspired to get in fit by the new Volkswagon Beetle, to the point where it can race it down the street. But then the epilogue comes on, and things get meta: it turns out the commercial is being watched on a TV screen at the Mos Eisley Cantina, where intergalactic patrons debate whether it was cuter than last year's commercial. And then Darth Vader does his choking thing.

From what the NY Times reports, it seems that only the first two-thirds of the commercial—the non-Star Wares stuff—will make it to television during the Super Bowl. We still think the dogs barking the Imperial March was better than the final one however. Maybe next year, Volkswagon can throw in 100% more Amy Sedaris.
