About this time last year, the Whitney Museum announced their plans to open a downtown space in the Meatpacking District, and earlier this week, they held a high-flying groundbreaking ceremony for the new building, located at the foot of the High Line. And if you missed it, that's okay, it's really just a pile of dirt right now and you can go to the real museum tomorrow for free.

Mayor Bloomberg, architect Renzo Piano and Whitney Director Adam Weinberg were on hand for the ceremony, during which Elizabeth Streb (friend of Philippe Petit!) and her Extreme Action Company performed a minute-long piece in which dancers swung through suspended glass panels and Bloomberg dumped dirt onto Streb. Oh, art!

The new space is set for completion in 2015, but in the meantime, to celebrate, the museum is making everyone a member for the day tomorrow, with free admission and a 10% discount at the Whitney store (from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
