Lauryn Hill has been doing her thing more often lately, what with a one-off show at the Highline Ballroom recently as well as joining Nas for the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert (you know, that one). But while she's been killing it onstage, Hill has apparently not been killing it with TurboTax: The feds have charged her with tax evasion.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in NJ says that Hill, a South Orange, N.J. resident, did not file tax returns for calendar years 2005, 2006, and 2007: "Hill owns and operates four corporations in addition to being an entertainer: Creations Music, Inc., Boogie Tours, Inc., L.H. Productions 2001, Inc. and Studio 22, Inc. Her primary source of income is royalties from the recording and film industries. During the three years she failed to file tax returns, Hill received more than $1.6 million in income."
The mother of six is scheduled to appear in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp on June 29, 2012. The counts each carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
