Snow in Union Square in 1910 (via the Library of Congress)
When Mother Nature doesn't deliver, New York will bring in winter on its own. This Thursday the I Love NY crew is bringing snow to Union Square, even though it will be a balmy 45 degrees. How much snow? "Tons," we're told. They say, "Residents of New York are invited to enjoy a winter wonderland," while they learn where to find the real white stuff elsewhere in the state.
The weather event is happening to "remind New Yorkers that the mountains of New York are covered with fresh and man-made snow," where you can go snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, or even ziplining. Even if you don't want to venture upstate, you'll be able to take test runs in Union Square if you're not over the height requirement—they're offering children ages 3 to 6 rides on snowboards with lessons from instructors.
They plan to truck in the white stuff, and "blow tons of fresh snow, utilizing the latest snow-making technology to create this incredible winter wonderland." Expect to start spotting the snowfall on Wednesday night, when it's brought in around 9 p.m., and enjoy it from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. It's no mountain on the East River, but we'll take it.
