Under the Radar isn't the only genre-busting experimental theater festival happening this month—P.S. 122 has just kicked off its 7th annual COIL Festival of experimental dance, theater and performance works. Formerly lasting about a week, COIL has been greatly expanded and will now run through January 29th. There are a lot of intriguing productions in the works this year, staged at various venues downtown while P.S. 122 undergoes an extensive renovation. (One space at the legendary performance mecca is still in use.)
Click through on the photos for P.S. 122's descriptions of this year's highlights, which include premieres from Young Jean Lee, Temporary Distortion, and Belgium-based dance artist Davis Freeman, who invites an audience of only ten to experience his unique two-hour show that "eliminates the barriers between performer and audience. Ticket buyers are required to make an appointment to have their photograph taken at least 48 hours in advance of attending the performance. A cast of local performers then wear the photographs like masks, creating the illusion that the audience is performing for themselves. Using set and newly developed choreography, Too Shy to Stare is also dependent on how far the audience is willing to let their imaginations take them."
Ticket prices range between $20-$25, and $30 gets you into P.S. 122's annual raging fundraiser, The Red & White Party, which this year goes down at table tennis lounge SPiN New York, featuring performances by choreographer Jack Ferver, DJ Spooky, and performance tour de force Reggie Watts.
