As you may have heard, the fascinating documentary Hands on a Hard Body has been adapted into a rock musical by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and others. Following a run at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, the musical will make the jump to Broadway in the 2012-2013 season. The production reportedly hews close to the general narrative of the 1997 documentary, which concerns twenty-four contestants who compete to keep their hand on a pickup truck for the longest amount of time at a car dealership. The winner gets the truck, the losers lose their minds. Here's a behind-the-scenes video of what to expect:

The musical's book was written by Doug Wright, who won a Pulitzer Prize for I Am My Own Wife, and features lyrics by Amanda Green (Bring It On: The Musical). Anastasio, of course, needs no introduction around these parts.

According to the show's publicists, Anastasio is currently at work on a new solo album, which will be released this fall. And fun fact: Trey starred in his High School production of Anything Goes in New Jersey!
