When Amy Winehouse died last July, punk icon Patti Smith put pen to paper and wrote a poem for the singer. Now NME reports, via an interview the singer did with Uncut, that she's recorded the song, and it will appear on her upcoming album:
"The little song for Amy just blossomed in the studio. We were at [New York studio] Electric Lady doing a whole other song and I wrote Amy a little poem when she died and my bass player, Tony Shanahan, wrote a piece of music and the two matched perfectly. We wrote a very nice little song for Amy Winehouse, and I think a beautiful song for Maria Schneider, the actress who was a friend of mine in the '70s. They just happened, like gifts."
Schneider, who played opposite Marlon Brando in Last Tango in Paris, died last February at the age of 58. Smith's tribute follows song dedications, or live performance dedications to the singer from the likes of Green Day, M.I.A., and Coldplay.
Smith is also delving into film, and currently adapting her book, Just Kids, for the big screen.
