Layla and Kumi have a lot in common: They're both 16-year-old western lowland gorillas who happen to live at the Bronx Zoo, and, in January, they both gave birth to healthy babies —conceived with the same male, no less (nice moves, 32-year-old Ernie).
Today, their offspring, two adorable half-siblings of undetermined gender, are making their public debut at the Congo Gorilla Forest. They've joined the largest group of gorillas on the North American continent, following on the heels of two other babies born just last year.
The zoo has stressed that these babies are sensitive to fluctuations in weather and temperature, and won't be visible every day. In lieu of paying admittance, check out this supercut of gorilla playdates and lessons in parenting, interspersed with the gorilla equivalent of doleful puppy eyes.
The Bronx Zoo says its gorilla habitat has raised more than $12 million for the Wildlife Conservation Society's conservation programs in Africa through admission fees.
The Bronx Zoo is located at 2300 Southern Boulevard. (718-220-5100; bronxzoo.com).
