D'Angelo recently surprised fans with his first new album in 14 years, Black Messiah, and his only tour dates were in Europe—until now. The Apollo Theater announced that the soul singer will be appearing for one night, Saturday, February 7th.
The Apollo says D'Angelo has some real history with the historic theater:
Additionally, the Apollo concert will mark D’Angelo’s first time headlining the iconic Theater. However, the Grammy Award-winning musician is no stranger to the Apollo. In 1991, at the age of 16, he competed in the Theater’s long running competition show, Amateur Night at the Apollo, under the group name Michael Archer and Precise. Describing this experience as “surreal” and “amazing,” the singer and his group went on to win three consecutive nights and a cash prize. Using his Amateur Night winnings, D’Angelo purchased recording equipment and began writing the songs that would eventually end up on his 1995 classic debut album, Brown Sugar. He later returned to the Apollo as a guest artist on the popular television show Showtime at the Apollo.
Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, January 21 at 10 a.m. Rolling Stone called Black Messiah a "warm, expansive masterpiece." And it's sexxxxxxy.
