Music festivals are (probably) back, baby. As promised back in January, Governors Ball will be returning this year after last year's cancelation due to the pandemic. The festival will take place September 24th through 26th, later than usual, and at Citi Field instead of their usual Randalls Island location.

The headliners for the 10th anniversary of the fest are the motley crew of Grammy-conquering singer/songwriter Billie Eilish, ultra-popular tattoo enthusiast and trap pop star Post Malone, rapper and fashion icon A$AP ROCKY, and Colombian reggaeton sensation J Balvin.

Moving down the bill, there are lots of very exciting artists to check out: Megan Thee Stallion is of course one of the best rappers alive right now; Phoebe Bridgers is deservedly one of the most popular indie rock artists; Big Thief is an incredible folk-rock band with Radiohead-like complexity to their compositions; DaBaby can't stop rolling out hits; Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist are my personal pick for best hip hop artist to see on the lineup, followed by MIKE and Kota The Friend; Bartees Strange released one of the best debut rock albums of 2020; Young Thug is the John Lennon of hip hop; Jamie XX is an incredible DJ and producer; and Carly Rae Jepsen is pop royalty. And that's just skimming the surface!

You know who is psyched about the return of festivals? Mayor Bill de Blasio: “Building a recovery for all of us means reconnecting with the iconic events that make New York City the greatest travel destination in the world. As more New Yorkers become vaccinated by the day, we’re proud to support arts and culture and welcome back Governors Ball and their fantastic lineup, including New York City’s own  Princess Nokia, A$AP Rocky, and King Princess, among others," de Blasio, who has definitely heard of Princess Nokia, A$AP Rocky, and King Princess before this, said in a statement.

As for COVID safety guidelines and procedures, Governors Ball notes that everything is in flux right now: "This is a bit of a moving target as health guidelines will evolve over time (as more and more people are vaccinated). While we don’t know what may or may not be required come show day (e.g. proof of vaccination, proof of negative test, etc), rest assured that we are working closely with the City, and we will follow ALL  state and federal health guidelines provided."

According to the state guidance released this week, Governors Ball would be subject to the same rules as other large-scale outdoor event venues; as of May 19th, it would operate at 33 percent with social distancing, masks and the requirement of attendee vaccination proof or recent negative COVID test. But those guidelines are of course subject to change in the coming months.

As for the move to Citi Field, Governors Ball says that actually isn't because of the pandemic. "It gives the festival more space to work with, it has an abundance of convenient transportation options, and there will be more flexibility when it comes to weather," said spokesperson Chris Vinyard. You can see a video about the new setup below.

Three-day and one-day GA and VIP tickets will be available starting at noon on Thursday May 6th; there's a special pre-sale for Citi Cardmembers starting today.

Organizers add that refunds will be available if Governors Ball 2021 does not take place. Also, anyone with 2020 tickets can transfer their tickets to this year’s festival

Governors Ball 2020 was canceled as the city began to shut down last March, and was set to include Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Stevie Nicks, Solange, Miley Cyrus and Missy Elliott, who would have been performing her first major NYC headline show in over a decade.

Tickets start at $129/day (for General Admission) and go up from there.
