Get your laugh on: This American Life contributor Sarah Vowell hosts an evening of humorous music and hilarious comedy this Friday at Southpaw. Performances by musical tag-team They Might Be Giants, comedians David Cross and Todd Barry, as well as musical theater collaborative People Are Wrong (featuring John Flansburgh of TMBG).
Tickets are $50, and proceeds will benefit 826NYC, an educational laboratory opening this summer in Brooklyn. 826NYC - the east-coast iteration of its sister nonprofit 826 Valencia - will host tutoring, workshops on writing, training in English as a second language, as well as serve as a forum for young writers to publish their work.
Gothamist has enjoyed TMBG, Cross, Barry and Vowell in the past, and thinks that combining them onto one bill is not to be missed. Attendees are welcome to an afterparty at the storefront 826NYC will operate behind, the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., purveyor of equipment for "superheroes in need of capes, masks, utility belts, grappling hooks, and whatever else their crime fighting tasks call for."
Southpaw is located at 125 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-230-0236). The performance begins at 8:00pm. If you cannot attend the benefit, you can make a tax-deductible donation to 826NYC directly.
