Yesterday was Purim, the annual holiday commemorating the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasueru and would-be Jew killer. The festivities in ultra-Orthodox South Williamsburg involved the usual merriment and masquerading, as well as massive party buses and cold hard cash for the kids.
