The beloved NYC Marathon will return this fall for its 50th anniversary, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
The marathon—which will be held on November 7th—will allow for 33,000 participants, about 60% of its usual number (2019 was a record year with over 53,000). Registration opens on June 8th, and health and safety guidelines will be in place and may be subject to change, depending on what guidance emerges between now and marathon day.
“This will be an unprecedented and historic year for the TCS New York City Marathon as one of the most iconic New York sporting events makes its return,” said Ted Metellus, the race's director, in a statement. “As we stage a safe and memorable race for the 50th running, this year’s marathon will showcase our great city’s strength, inspiration, and determination."
The New York Road Runners Club, which oversees the race, contacted people who originally signed up for the canceled 2020 marathon with an email: "Runners who were part of the resolution and ranked 2021 as their top choice have guaranteed entry. NYRR will email those runners by May 20 with a formal confirmation of their entry and additional details on how to complete their registration. Please confirm that your email address is up to date in your nyrr.org profile to ensure you receive our communications."
At this point, the marathon will enact these measures, according to the governor's office:
- Staggered start times between runners based on pace, space, and release timing over several additional hours
- Appropriate social distancing at all times, including before and after the race, except for members of the same household or family
- Required masks at all times for event staff and volunteers. Runners will wear masks before and after the race
- Mandated health screening of participants, event staff, and volunteers which may include proof of full vaccination status or recent negative test result
- Start and finish lines will be controlled access for participants, event staff, and volunteers; a limited number of spectators may be permitted at the finish line, in accordance with health and safety guidelines
- Modified race day activities to reduce any unnecessary congregations including pre-packaged amenities, no baggage service, no public-facing awards ceremony, and limited on-site entertainment
The NYRR's FAQ about the 2021 marathon suggests that "runners should be prepared to provide a negative COVID-19 test result or proof of a complete vaccination series prior to running."
